La Tonnarella has started out as a residential summer villa belonging to the Gargiulo family. Still keeping its fascinating atmosphere with antique furnishing and ceramic tiles plus the interesting architectural style of interwoven tufa stone cornices, it has been transformed into a delightful hotel with a backdrop of blue sea.
The hotel is an oasis of peace and tranquillity, for those who wish to sample a corner of paradise, set on a spur of rock in one of the most panoramic settings of Sorrento where at one time there was a Tonnara . The Hotel takes name from a typical fishing net used to fish little tunas called Tonnarella. The mentioned net is different from the Tonnara itself because it has only three sections and particularly doesn’t have the death section or Mattanza, since Mackerels, Palamiti and Tunas have to be fished alive. The net is nowadays used during autumn, when small tunas pass by.On the edge of the cliff there was a small tower called Guardiola, today transformed into a viewpoint, in the past used to check the net of la “Tonnarella”.
